About the Founder, Tim Derby



It has been said, “Those who can do, do.  Those who can’t, teach.”  Tim’s philosophy, however, is “Those who can do, should do, as well as teach.”  You will quickly discover Tim Derby Karate is more than just your average karate school, because Tim Derby is not just your average karate instructor.

Tim Derby earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Professional Accounting from Mississippi State University in Starkville, MS.  He earned a Masters Degree in Theological Studies from Liberty Theological Seminary in Lynchburg, VA.  In addition, Tim completed his Biblical Greek Studies at Yale University in New Haven, CT.  He also served as a U. S. delegate for Christian Apologetics at Oxford University in England.  Tim is also a highly decorated 25-year veteran of traditional karate, earning numerous black belts.  As the founder of American te-jitsu karate, Tim has achieved the highest rank available in the Martial Arts – a 10th degree black belt.

In 1989, while earning his undergraduate degree, Tim began professionally teaching karate.  Now more than two decades later, he is continues to be committed to teaching the finer points of karate to adults and children.

In addition to being a husband, father of two, as well as a professional karate instructor, Tim is also the Founder and President of Redirect Ministries.   Redirect is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization focusing specifically on influencing youth as well as equipping parents in order to strengthen the Christian family.  Through Redirect, Tim has created numerous nationally recognized youth programs; the most widely recognized being the TEEN INFLUENCE program and the juvenile detention center REDIRECT program.

As an author, as well as a nationally recognized speaker, Tim has appeared on national TV and radio discussing strategies for enriching the lives of our nation’s youth and equipping parents as well as youth leaders.  He has served as an advisor to various agencies such as the U.S. Department of Education, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Justice, and the White House office of Domestic Policy.  As a result of his efforts, Tim has also received numerous awards and honors including multiple White House invitations from the President and Mrs. George W. Bush.

Tim Derby resides in Columbus, Mississippi, where he and his wife, Kathy, raise their two wonderful children, Ashley and Hunter.
